Embrace Your Self-Worth and Stand Up Against Unfair Treatment!
Today, I experienced unfair treatment during a cycling group class at the gym. The instructor asked if I had registered, and when I said no, she rudely told me to leave with a blunt ‘OUT!’ Instead of politely asking me to leave, she chose to be outright rude. I promptly reported the incident to the front desk, where the receptionist apologized and assured me they would address the issue with the instructor.
In that moment, I felt immensely proud of myself. Unlike the old me who would silently endure unfair treatment, I chose to speak up for myself.
In 2020, during an interview for a part-time tutor position at a startup, the CEO told me that with my qualifications, I could never become a data scientist. He said that even PhD graduates couldn’t find jobs, and since I wasn’t from an Ivy League school, there was no chance for me. I cried right then, the first and only time I’ve ever cried in an interview. I felt utterly humiliated. Despite him offering me the job ‘out of pity’, I refused to work in such an environment. Now, looking back, I wish I had stood up for myself and refuted his statement.
If you fail to recognize your own value, you’re essentially giving permission for others to exploit your low self-esteem and bully you. Failure to stand up after being bullied only encourages them to escalate their behavior. Don’t become an accomplice in your own bullying.
You might find yourself habitually working against your own interests. A joke from someone makes you self-conscious, a moment of neglect makes you uneasy. You start doubting yourself, and unknowingly become a helper in your own mistreatment.
But your worth is not tied to others’ evaluations; your happiness shouldn’t depend on others’ approval. Your existence inherently holds irreplaceable value.
Be your own ally, not your enemy. It starts with refusing to belittle yourself.
✅When facing challenges, encourage yourself: You’re doing great!
✅When dealing with failure, remind yourself: It’s okay, you’ll do better!
You should be your own strongest support. No matter what, don’t join others in bullying yourself.
